Nice look & feel, VERY POOR workmanship!! Dec 17, 2009
By CDM I have owned this watch for about 1 year now. It has a nice look and feel to it; feels sturdy, has a nice weight and looks very nice. Thank being said, I have expereinced 3 major issues. Although it is supposed to be water resistant to a depth of 98 feet, mine got water inside within a week of owning it, simply by washing my hands/face, and within a day it stopped working altogether. Since still under warranty, i returned it to KC (Shipping at my cost?!) for repair and got it back 2 weeks later. BUT now, within a day or so of setting the correct time, it runs between 5-10 minutes fast and if not corrected, with in a week it can be up to 25 minutes fast! Not wanting to have to incur a further cost for shipping, i decided to just live with the bother of having to correct the time every other day. Don't waste your money on this poorly built watch.
You get what you pay for... Feb 06, 2011
By logical_frank I think you get what you pay for with this watch, which retails for ~$185 but can certainly be had for much less (as through Amazon). The one existing review faults the watch for: 1) not being water-resistant; 2) not keeping very accurate time. Obviously, one can only critique that actual units received, so I'll comment on my own:
I've had no problems with the water-resistance, and always run it under the faucet at the end of the day after wearing it to clean off any accumulated sweat - perhaps the other reviewer had a faulty crown seal or accidentally did not push the crown all the way back in (this last one is pretty unlikely, as the watch hands won't turn in such a case)? As for the watch running fast, I've kept track of its timing relative to a digital watch (Casio G-Shock) over the course of two days just to be "scientific" about it, and have observed no loss of synchronization minute-wise. Perhaps the previous reviewer happened to have a particular run of bad luck with defective units - or perhaps I had a particularly good bit of luck! Who can say with such a small number of cases from which to judge.
I have also observed the length of time the watch can stay running after fully winding the mainspring and without further disturbance to the rotor, and it seems to last about 40 hours or so - I understand this is pretty typical for an "entry-level" modern automatic watch. What is really nifty about this particular watch is that you can easily see the mainspring through the face and "cutouts" in the dial between the "12" and "1" and therefore see whether the watch needs motional winding! When the mainspring has wound down torsionally, it is pushed out towards the perimeter of the circular bridle and barrel (looks like an "O"); as you wind it up with circular or half-circular motions, you can literally see the coil of the mainspring wind inwards towards its center, until the coils are spread out radially to fill in the hole of the "O" (very cool to see!). I have noticed that just the act of hand-washing a sink full of dishes is enough motion to wind the watch up and keep it "topped off".
Definitely a nice looking watch - I've gotten lots of compliments on it. I have yet to bring myself to spend many more hundreds of dollars to get a better automatic watch, and one wonders how much better in quality those extra dollars will get you. For example, I have a bit of a "tin ear" for audio systems - it's perhaps from a youth spent listening to loud music and losing my higher frequency hearing - but I really can't tell much of a difference between a really high end stereo system and one that is considered good and middle-of-the-road. But, if I did have that sensitivity, I would still weigh the cost-to-benefits to see whether spending $5000 versus $1000 on a stereo is really worth it - and the same logic applies here. Besides, most of us use our cell-phones to get the most accurate gauge of time, so it doesn't seem super critical to have a watch that keeps perfect time without any intervention for weeks and months on end - it's really not a very big deal to adjust the watch every once in a while! This watch is definitely not so cheap that it keeps poor time.
