Tissot T-Touch, a cool watch Sep 17, 2009
By Alan Ambrose
"Al Ambrose"
I bought this Tissot T-Touch with the black rubber band and orange dial about a month ago. The watch is a fun little gadget, but probably not very practical. I like the look, the color, and it is very lightweight but also quite rugged (titanium). The touchscreen works quite well, but I am not sure just how accurate the features are. In compass mode, the hands form a straight line, and supposedly function as an electronic compass. Of course the device seems to be very sensitive to metal objects/electromagnetic interference so I am not sure if I would purchase this watch for applications that required critical compass accuracy... like the other touchscreen features, it is more of a novelty than a practical device. The same goes for the altimeter and the barometer; I would not skydive and rely on this watch as my altimeter, nor would I make weather-dependent plans while relying upon the T-Touch's barometric forecast accuracy. The touchscreen also has a thermometer, but in the instruction booklet it states that you should remove the watch from your wrist and let it sit for 15 to 30 minutes in order to get an accurate temperature reading... how practical is that? Checking the thermometer while wearing the watch will invariably produce an unusually high temperature reading due to the effects of body heat. It is water resistant to 30m, and while swimming I noticed that if the touchscreen (and your fingers) are wet, the touchscreen will not function properly if at all; it worked fine again once dry. Also, the watch has glow in the dark hands and hour markings, but no backlight.
So in the final analysis: This is a fun watch, I like it and I like the look, and that is why I give it 3 out of 5 stars. If I had purchased this expecting the features (compass, altimeter, barometer, thermometer) to be precise instruments I would have given it 1 star (and probably returned it as well). At $300+ dollars, it is a bit pricey for a novelty sportwatch, but part of that is name-brand/marketing. Its fun to show off to guys at work, "hey look at my electronic compass, cool huh?"... but after that novelty has worn off, it is just a rugged sportwatch with a few cool toys built in.
UPDATE: 3/6/10
Okay, so I've had this watch for over 6 months now. The one thing that has really amazed me is that it keeps incredibly accurate time. I have not had to set the time since I first set it. I listen to a news radio on my way to work each morning, and whenever the time is exactly on the hour they interject a loud beep into their broadcast (to let us time fanatics know precisely when the hour strikes); I always check my watch when I hear the beep, and I can say that this Tissot hasn't really lost or gained more than 10 seconds over the past six months... pretty good accuracy in my opinion!
